In 1997 the magical energy of the Earth went under a shift allowing ghosts to escape the City of the Dead and attack humans. After many deaths, the Church of Truth came to power, being the only organization that could control the ghosts. Twenty-three years later, the Church is still in power and protecting humans from the ghosts with yearly controlled release on the anniversary week of the first shift. The Church employs people with strong magic talent and trains them to be Churchwitches. Chess is a Churchwitch who is a Debunker. A Debunker investigates ghost activity and determine if it is a true haunting or a fake one. If it is a true haunting, she is charged with the duty to send the ghost back to the City. If it is a fake one, the Church deals with the family.

However, Chess is not a normal Debunker or Churchwitch. She lives in Downside. A part of Triumph City that is “bad side” of town. Home to drugs, illegal magic, and other societal ills. Chess is also a drug addict and finds herself if deep debt to her dealer, Bump. Now Bump has a job he wants Chess to complete and he will erase her current debt. Bump wants to start using the closed airport, Chester, to move his drugs. But his planes keep having technical difficulties. Bump is convinced it is caused by ghosts and wants Chess to get rid of them.

In addition to Bump’s request, Chess has an active case with the Church. She soon discovers a connection between the two cases and finds herself in danger. Chess is also threatened by Bump’s rival who does not want Bump to use the airport. Can Chess solve the hauntings to the airfield and not loose her life to the rival Drug Lord of Downside?

I only recently started reading Urban Fantasy, my first series was Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series. After seeing many people praise Stacia Kane’s Downside series, I decided it was time to give it a try. I was addicted to the story and the characters very quickly. Stacia has done a wonderful job in creating a very real world and making a very flawed heroine that you cheer on and want to keep following. I also held my breath every time I thought Chess’s lifestyle will be revealed to her employer. Even though Chess is an extreme drug addict and is constantly thinking of what drugs she will spend her money on, I can not help but love her. Part of me hopes that maybe someday Chess will go clean, but until she is willing to face her past, that will not happen.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Paranormal, but wants something different. This is not a book for people who need sunshine and daisies. This is for those who do not mind reading about people your mom always warned you about.

I am giving this book a 4 horse shoe rating!
